One valley, several levels
Méribel runs up the Allues valley, from Méribel Centre at 1450 metres to Mottaret at 1750, by way of Le Belvédère and the hamlet of Les Allues lower down. Chalets are scattered across the slopes, often served by private roads steep enough to need a suitable vehicle in winter.
The valley road is wider and less winding than the Courchevel climb, which makes it easier on passengers prone to travel sickness — a difference that counts when you travel with young children.
Arriving on a changeover Saturday
As everywhere in the Tarentaise, rentals change hands on Saturday. On that day the valley absorbs the departure and arrival of tens of thousands of people within a few hours. Early-afternoon arrivals are the most exposed.
A flight landing in Geneva mid-morning and a resort departure in the early afternoon both fall inside the peak. Where the flight schedule allows it, shifting by half a day transforms the journey.
Les Allues, down the valley
Below the resort, the village of Les Allues at 1100 metres keeps a life of its own, with old chalets and access on the D90 from Brides-les-Bains. It is a common address for rental stays, and a ten-minute climb separates it from Méribel Centre.
Brides-les-Bains, lower still, is linked to Méribel by gondola. Some travellers stay there and ride up with skis on: drop-off is then at the base station rather than in the resort, which shortens the road journey appreciably.
La Chaudanne, where everything converges
La Chaudanne is Méribel's hub: most of the main lifts leave from there, as does the Olympic ice rink left by the 1992 Games. It is also the landmark most travellers give when they have no precise address for their chalet.
In practice, dropping at La Chaudanne works well outside peak hours but gets difficult between 8.30 and 9.30, when the whole resort converges on the lifts. For an arrival in that window, dropping as close to the accommodation as possible remains better.
