Val Thorens sits at 2300 metres, which makes it the highest resort in Europe. The practical consequence is maximum exposure to conditions: the access road from Moûtiers can be restricted or closed after heavy snowfall, sometimes only for a few hours while it is cleared.
We do not set off without checking the road status with the Savoie authorities, and we tell you if the slot has to move. Quoting an arrival time the mountain will not allow serves no one.
A car-free resort
Val Thorens is pedestrian: vehicles stop at the resort entrance, at the covered car parks stacked beneath the snow front. Drop-off happens on the level matching your accommodation, and the last stretch is on foot or via the internal travelators and lifts.
That changes how a transfer is prepared. The name of the residence and its car park number matter more than the address: they decide which level we drop you on, and therefore how far you carry your bags.
A gateway to the Three Valleys
Val Thorens opens onto the largest linked ski area in the world. On skis you reach Les Menuires, Méribel then Courchevel — but by road those resorts sit in different valleys and dropping back to Moûtiers is unavoidable.
A resort-to-resort transfer therefore takes far longer than a piste map suggests: reckon an hour between Val Thorens and Courchevel by road, against a morning on skis. It is a common confusion, better cleared up before booking.
Orelle, the Maurienne way in
Val Thorens also connects to the ski area from Orelle, in the Maurienne valley, by a gondola that crosses the ridge. For a traveller coming from Italy through the Fréjus tunnel or from Turin, that access avoids driving all the way up the Tarentaise.
One caveat: going up via Orelle means leaving the vehicle in the Maurienne and reaching the resort by cable. It suits a day's skiing, not a stay with luggage. For an arrival in the resort itself, the road through Moûtiers remains the only option.
