Three ways into the resort
Val d'Isère comes in three sectors strung along the road: La Daille first on the way up, then the resort centre, then Le Fornet, highest and most set apart. La Daille to Le Fornet is about four kilometres, and the order matters: getting it wrong means crossing the whole resort.
The centre is partly pedestrianised in season, with vehicle access regulated by time of day. Drop-off happens as close as the current order allows, which we check before setting off rather than on arrival.
A single access road
The climb from Bourg-Saint-Maurice is the only way in during winter. The Col de l'Iseran, which links the Maurienne in summer, closes with the first snows and usually reopens only in June. There is therefore no fallback route between November and spring.
That makes the road sensitive to conditions and to avalanche risk, which can bring temporary closures ordered by the prefecture. We watch those orders and tell you before you leave, not during.
Summer at altitude
Val d'Isère does not live on winter alone. Once the Col de l'Iseran reopens, the resort becomes a waypoint on the Route des Grandes Alpes and a base for high-altitude cycling. Summer journeys run in far easier conditions, with no equipment requirement and no slot to hold.
Getting around once you are there
Val d'Isère runs free shuttles, among them the Train Rouge linking La Daille to Le Fornet along the length of the resort. For short internal hops they are usually enough and save taking a vehicle out.
A private car earns its place for what the shuttles do not cover: a run over to Tignes, a booking in Sainte-Foy, a late return from a mountain restaurant reachable by road. We arrange those as single journeys or as an evening hire.
