The gulf road, and why it matters
Saint-Tropez has no motorway. Wherever you start, the last stretch runs along the gulf road — usually the D559 from Sainte-Maxime or the D98 from Le Muy. It is a single lane each way with no real alternative, and it saturates in July and August: the same journey can take forty minutes in May and two hours on an August Saturday.
That constraint is managed by timing rather than routing. Leaving before eight in the morning or after nine at night changes everything. We build it into the estimate we give you, rather than quoting a theoretical time the road will not deliver.
Ports, beaches and access
The old port stays reachable by car down to the quays outside peak periods; in high season drop-off moves to the Place des Lices or the port entrance depending on the orders in force. The village itself is a run of narrow lanes where a large vehicle simply does not fit.
The Pampelonne beaches, in neighbouring Ramatuelle, are about fifteen minutes away on the Route des Plages. Each beach club has its own access and car park: naming the beach is rarely enough, naming the club is.
Which airport to fly into
Three airports serve the gulf and the choice is not neutral. Toulon-Hyères is closest at around an hour, while Nice asks two hours on the road despite its better international connections.
Marseille-Provence is the furthest of the three. The right call depends less on distance than on your arrival time and the season.
Coming in by sea
In season, shuttle boats link Sainte-Maxime, Port Grimaud and Les Issambres to the old port of Saint-Tropez in about fifteen minutes. They bypass the gulf road and its queue altogether.
The arrangement then becomes mixed: we drop you at the Sainte-Maxime landing stage, you cross, and we pick up on the other side if needed. On an August Saturday that combination often saves more than an hour against an all-road journey.
