A village, not a purpose-built resort
Chamonix grew around an existing village, and it shows in the street layout: the centre is a set of narrow, partly pedestrian streets where horse-drawn carriages still run. Drop-off happens just outside, at the Place de l'Église or on Rue Ambroise Martin depending on the address.
The large chalets sit on the heights — Mont d'Arbois, Rochebrune, Le Jaillet — served by steep private roads. In winter those accesses need an equipped vehicle, and sometimes the caretaker to open a gate.
Close to Geneva
Chamonix is the French Alpine resort nearest Geneva: around seventy kilometres, an hour and a quarter in normal conditions via the Autoroute Blanche then the Arve valley. That is markedly less than the Tarentaise resorts, and it changes how an arrival day is organised.
A flight landing in the late afternoon still allows dinner in the resort that evening. Conversely, an early departure from Chamonix stays realistic without getting up in the middle of the night — which is not true from Val Thorens or Val d'Isère.
Around Chamonix
Chamonix is ringed by communes sharing its ski area or its valley: Combloux and Praz-sur-Arly a few minutes away, Saint-Gervais-les-Bains and Le Bettex a little further, Chamonix an hour down the Arve valley.
The resort also has an altiport at Mont d'Arbois, used by light aircraft and helicopters. As at Courchevel, its opening depends on conditions: we move the pickup point if the aircraft ends up landing at Annecy or Geneva.
Outside the ski season
Chamonix lives all year, which sets it apart from the high-altitude resorts. In summer the Mont d'Arbois golf course, the mountain pastures and the views across the Mont Blanc range draw a different clientele; in autumn the village stays open when Tarentaise resorts have shut their shops.
For a transfer, that means service does not pause between seasons. The winter constraints — equipment, slots, closures — fall away, and the run from Geneva returns to its steady hour and a quarter.
